Одностороннее движение уводило нас из ночного города на солнечное, райское южноамериканское побережье. Здесь визуальное пространство фильма постепенно захватывают горы, снег, холод – сначала во флэшбеках, затем в настоящем времени. Заснеженные и безмолвные горные пейзажи не становятся, как в На опасной территории, On Dangerous Ground, 1952, Николаса Рея, спасительным убежищем для героя, но в данном случае особенно хорошо работают на выразительное смягчение реальности, как в изображении, так и на уровне звуков, чего всегда добивался Турнёр в своих фильмах. Это смягчение в кинематографе – то же самое, что литота в литературе. Но в использовании этого приема чувствуется также поиск обыденного и скрытого. Турнёра интересует не столько зрелищная трагедия, сколько то, что скрывается за ней и коренится в ее основе. В этой зоне, запрятанной глубоко и неблагодарной для описания, его воля, неутомимое стремление докопаться до сути раскрывают со всей очевидностью фундаментальные основы отношения персонажей к миру: страшную усталость («Вы не можете даже представить себе, как я устал, мистер Фрейзер», – говорит Алдо Рей) и постоянное удивление тем ситуациям, в которые они попадают. Повсюду знакомое становится удивительным, а удивительное – знакомым. «Familiar looks very different» («Знакомое кажется совсем другим») – этот довольно туманный комплимент, адресованный героем Алдо Рея героине Энн Бэнкрофт, мог бы послужить эпиграфом ко всему творчеству Турнёра.
